Wins, Losses & Red Handprints for Native Creatives at the Emmy’s

At this year’s Emmy’s, Native creatives like Lily Gladstone (Siksikaitsitapii/Nimíipuu) and Woon-A-Tai (Oji-Cree) were nominated for sundry ‘firsts’ for their work in shows from Reservation Dogs to Under the Bridge, True Detective: Night Country, and Echo. These shows are percussive, hilarious, and poignant in their own right. They comprise a new oeuvre reflective of a paradigm shift in Hollywood towards employing and accurately representing Native people and the stories and experiences most dear to them. But if Lily Gladstone’s egregious Oscar loss was any indication, it’s no surprise the industry failed to meet this moment. But this is just the beginning for these actors.
