Hello! I have decided to begin posting readings of my reviews and articles along with the written posts for my auditory and visual learners. The videos won’t include much writing unless you have a particular request.
I will probably provide some kind of topical, jocose commentary at the beginning and end of these readings to assuage my own nerves as I get excited on camera.
This reading is my review of Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut ‘Blink Twice.’
Tangentially, here is a fun little story about my experience as a trivia host. Gigs welcome!
A fun, shocking little story:
One of my responsibilities at my day job is DEI program management, and I typically host trivia for the corresponding commemorative observance months. I love the job. I think in another life, I’d be a TV host; I take on a larger-than-life persona that I am rarely energetic or confident enough to present in my daily life.
One month, while working at a data privacy startup of one hundred people, I hosted a Native American Heritage Month (NAHM) trivia night. I asked about the actual name and story behind the historical figure (and Disney Princess) Pocahontas. The response was complete silence, and I eventually answered. Immediately afterward, someone blurted out that they don’t know whose land they live on (Native nation’s land, that is) and suggested we begin conducting land acknowledgment. In response, I muttered, “How about reparations instead,” and no one but my CEO, who shot me a glare, registered my mumbling and quickly said, “Of course, it’s so important to acknowledge the unceded Native lands our team lives on.
Suffice it to say, this was a rather impressive and virtuous signal from a WASP executive. But it belied the glare shot at me just seconds prior. Doesn’t this perfectly capture the disingenuousness of virtue signaling? More thoughts on this later… My point was that I would love a gig hosting a show!
If you are a casting agent or producer, I am available. Please. ijbol
Anyway, I hope you like the reading. Please make requests for any content you’d like me to discuss live. Subsequent videos will be behind the paywall. Please take a moment to consider becoming a paid subscriber – it makes creating this content possible.
Enjoy!
